This month, Rez Film Club is honored to welcome special guest Jacob Floyd (assistant professor in the Martin Scorsese Department of Cinema Studies at NYU) for a 40th anniversary screening of Poltergeist II featuring Will Sampson!

All admission to Rez Film Club events are FREE and open to the public, plus one FREE small popcorn for each person! This month will also feature a special introduction from Jacob Floyd, along with pre-film trivia and prizes. Seating is first come, first served.

Jacob is teaching a course this summer on Indigenous Horror media at NYU Tulsa. This screening is in conjunction with his course during the week where they will be studying how Indigenous People have been represented in horror movies by non-Native filmmakers. Poltergeist II was selected because it features Mvskoke actor Will Sampson as Taylor (in one of the final film roles), a medicine man who helps the Freeling family, the protagonists from the first film, who are being haunted by the ghost of the evil Reverend Henry Kane.

On the film, Jacob said, "I remember this film always being on TV around Halloween (probably because it was cheaper to air than the first film). That is also why it has personal significance to me: it was probably the first time I saw a Mvskoke actor on TV, and certainly the first time I saw a Mvskoke person in a horror movie. The film is notable to me for Will Sampson’s performance, which grounds the film and provides subtle humor no matter how ridiculous the film gets."

The Freelings have escaped their haunted house, which is now being studied by paranormal investigators, including shaman Taylor (Will Sampson). When Taylor realizes that the Beast, masquerading as the Rev. Kane (Julian Beck), knows where young Carol Anne Freeling (Heather O'Rourke) now lives, he goes to warn the family that their daughter is in danger again. To protect Carol, her father, Steve (Craig T. Nelson), and the rest of the family must plot to take down the Beast.

About Jacob Floyd: Jacob Floyd is an assistant professor in the Martin Scorsese Department of Cinema Studies at NYU. He holds a PhD in English with an emphasis in Screen Studies from Oklahoma State University. An enrolled citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and of Cherokee descent, his primary research interest is Indigenous media, particularly how Native American media makers represent themselves, and have used screen media for their own interests throughout history. His current book project examines how Native actors in Studio Hollywood performed off-screen to influence the promotion and reception of their films, challenge their on-screen depictions, educate audiences, and advocate for Native causes. He is also interested in how contemporary Indigenous media makers work within, critique, and reinvent film approaches and genres, especially in horror. He is teaching a course at NYU-Tulsa this summer on Indigenous Horror media.
